Bast or Bastet was one of the most popular goddesses of Egypt, generally with the head of a cat. She is often shown with the ankh symbol of eternal life. Cats are sacred to her and the ancient Egyptians placed great value on cats due to the protection they provided against vermin. The cats were often mummified after death and presented to the goddess as an offering.
