Anubis is one of the most iconic gods of ancient Egypt. He is often depicted as a man with the head of a jackal. His name appears in the oldest texts as a guardian and protector of the dead. Anubis is the Greek version of his name, the ancient Egyptians knew him as Anpu. Originally, a god of the Underworld, over the course of history he became specifically associated with the embalming process and funeral rites. An iconic role of Anubis is that of the scale since he watches over the weighing of the heart against a feather and determines whether the person being judged is worthy of entering the realm of the dead or to be devoured by the goddess Ammit.
